Trust
When you have attained trust, there is nothing more precious, strengthening and valuable. When trust is damaged, it is devastating. Nothing is more destructive to a relationship. Once fractured, re-building trust can be immensely difficult and complicated. The process involves time and consistency and much healing. Destruction of trust has an extremely large ‘wake’, the force of which extends into many areas of a relationship. Respect
Having a consistent and strong foundation of respect that is understood and promoted by both partners is essential for the health and survival of all else in a relationship. Respect in a relationship is represented by treating the other person with value and esteem for their being, regardless of whether you agree or feel challenged by them.
Respect is about, first, awareness – awareness of the effect our words and behavior have on persons and situations around us. Awareness is having insight into the situation at hand with compassion, empathy, humility and authenticity. Respect is also about willingness, which allows for an open mind to see someone else’s point of view and to look deeply at ourselves with honesty. We must also, always stay tuned into how we are respecting ourselves. If we do not seek to be self-respectful, to value ourselves highly, we are less likely to expect respect from others or require respectful relationships.
